Insurance Questions Every Auto Detailing and Paint Shop Owner Should Ask

Running a detailing shop, a paint and body shop, or a mobile auto care business looks a lot different from running a full-service repair garage — but that doesn't mean your risk is any smaller. You're still handling customers' vehicles you don't own. You're still working with chemicals, sprays, and equipment that can cause real damage if something goes wrong. And if you run a mobile detailing operation, you've got exposure the moment you pull into someone's driveway.

We talk with detailing and paint shop owners across Indiana and surrounding states pretty regularly, and the questions tend to circle around the same handful of concerns. Here's what we tell them.

Not sure your policy covers chemical spills, mobile work, or that spray booth sitting in your shop?

Let's find the gaps before a claim does. Tell us a bit about your business and we'll follow up with real answers, not a sales pitch.

"A customer's car got scratched, stained, or damaged while it was with us. Are we covered?"

This is the number one worry we hear, and it's exactly what garage keepers liability insurance is for. Whether it's an interior stain that won't come out, a scratch from a buffer, or something more serious, this coverage helps pay to make it right while the vehicle is in your care, custody, or control. If you're a detail shop, paint shop, or mobile detailer, this is coverage we don't like to see businesses go without — because at some point, almost every shop has a claim like this.

"What if a paint job or detail work causes a problem after the customer drives away?"

That's a completed operations question, and it falls under your general liability and garage liability coverage. Say a clear coat starts peeling weeks later, or a chemical treatment damages upholstery that doesn't show up right away — this is what protects you when a claim comes in after the fact, not just in the moment.

"We use a lot of chemicals and paint products. What happens if there's a spill or fume issue?"

This is a bigger deal for paint and body shops than a lot of owners realize. Standard general liability policies often exclude pollution-related claims, which is why pollution liability coverage matters if you're spraying paint, using solvents, or disposing of chemical waste regularly. If a fume issue affects a neighboring business, or waste disposal becomes a liability question, this coverage is what stands behind you. It's one of the most commonly overlooked gaps we see when reviewing policies for paint shops specifically.

"we run a mobile detailing business — do we need different coverage than a shop with a storefront?"

Yes, and this trips people up. If you're driving to customers' homes or offices, you need commercial auto insurance for your vehicle, plus garage keepers liability that actually applies away from a fixed location — some policies only cover vehicles while they're on your premises, which doesn't help you much if you're detailing in someone's driveway. You'll also want to think about inland marine coverage for the equipment you're hauling around — pressure washers, vacuums, buffers, and detailing supplies aren't cheap to replace if they're stolen out of your van.

"What about our building, our spray booth, and our equipment?"

Commercial property insurance covers your shop, spray booth, buffers, lifts, and inventory. For paint shops specifically, a spray booth is a significant investment, and it's also one of the higher fire-risk pieces of equipment in your building. Making sure your property coverage reflects the real replacement cost of your equipment — not just what you paid for it years ago — is something worth double-checking every year or two, especially as equipment prices have climbed.

"Do we need workers' comp if it's just us and a couple of employees?"

If you have employees, workers' compensation insurance is generally required, and for a paint or detail shop, it matters more than people assume. Employees are working with chemicals, aerosols, and physical tasks like buffing and lifting all day. If someone gets hurt or has a reaction to a product on the job, workers' comp covers medical bills and lost wages, and it protects your business from a lawsuit tied to that injury.

"What if we get shut down for a few days because of a fire or equipment issue?"

Business interruption coverage (sometimes called business income coverage) helps replace lost income and cover ongoing expenses like rent and payroll if a covered event forces you to close temporarily. For a shop that depends on daily walk-in and scheduled business, even a short shutdown can hurt — this coverage is designed to soften that blow.

"We take a lot of bookings and payments online. Do we need cyber coverage?"

If you're using online scheduling, digital payment processing, or storing customer contact and vehicle information electronically, cyber liability insurance is worth a look. It helps cover costs tied to a data breach or cyberattack — customer notification, legal fees, and getting your systems back up. It's not just a concern for big companies anymore; small shops get targeted too, often because they're seen as easier targets.

Coverage That Matches How You Actually Run Your Shop

Detailing shops, paint and body shops, and mobile auto care businesses all carry different risk profiles, even though they sit in the same general category. A mobile detailer needs coverage that travels with them. A paint shop needs to think seriously about pollution exposure and spray booth risk. A full-service detail shop needs strong garage keepers coverage and solid equipment protection.

We'd rather have a real conversation about what your day-to-day actually looks like — how many vehicles you handle, whether you're mobile or fixed-location, what chemicals and equipment you're working with — and build coverage around that, instead of starting from a generic template.

If you run a detailing, paint, or auto care business anywhere in Indiana and surrounding states, We're happy to walk through your current policy or help you put one together from the ground up. No pressure — just a straightforward conversation about protecting what you've built.
